Wind energy in Brazil started in 1991, when the first commercial wind generator in Brazil came on-stream. This was a partnership between CBEE, the Brazilian Center for Wind Energy, and CELPE, the state of Pernambuco energy utility. It was funded by Folkecenter, a Danish research institute. This 224 kW wind turbine was the first ever to come on-stream in South America, in 1992. It was located in Fernando de Noronha, an archipelago off the coast of Pernambuco.
