Founded in 1972 under the name Den Norske Stats Oljeselskap AS—Statoil (the Norwegian State Oil company), we changed our name to Equinor in 2018. Our headquarters are in Stavanger, Norway, and we have over 21,000 employees.
We are the leading operator on the Norwegian continental shelf and have substantial international activities. We are engaged in exploration, development and production of oil and gas, as well as wind and solar power. We sell crude oil and are a major supplier of natural gas, with activities in processing, refining, and trading. Our activities are managed through eight business areas, staffs and support divisions, and we have operations in North and South America, Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania, and Norway.

Den Norske Stats Oljeselskap A/S was founded as a limited company owned by the Government of Norway.
1973
the company started work acquiring a presence in the petrochemical industry.
1980
Statoil decided to become a fully integrated petroleum company and started building the Statoil fuel station brand.
1981
the company acquired, as the first Norwegian company, operator rights on the Norwegian continental shelf on the Gullfaks field.
1985
The stations in Norway originated as Norol stations, while the stations in Denmark and Sweden were purchased from Esso.
1992
Company Purchsed the stations in Ireland from British Petroleum
2001
The company was privatised and made a public limited company, it changed its name to Statoil ASA.
2007
the merger between Statoil and Hydro finally became a reality. At the time, the new company was represented in 40 countries and had 29,500 employees.
2010
we carried out an initial public offering of Statoil Fuel & Retail ASA on the Oslo stock exchange (Oslo Børs),
2012
we sold all of our remaining shares in Statoil Fuel & Retail ASA to Alimentation Couche-Tard, who rebranded the service stations to Circle K in 2016.
2018
We changed our name from Statoil to Equinor. The biggest transition our modern-day energy systems have ever seen is underway.
