DETAIL DESCRIPTION

Overview

At Cougar, we work in close collaboration with each of our clients to understand your needs and provide stabilizers that are consistently constructed to exacting standards. To start with, we use only 4145H heat-treated, stress-relieved steel — every bar of which is tested by independent metallurgical laboratories to verify its quality. We then dedicate a single piece of steel for each stabilizer that we mill. All connections are machined to API specification, with bore back, stress-relief and phosphated.

Benefits & Features

  • Permit increased weight on the bit for increased penetration without the deviation problems associated with high weight on the bit
  • Decrease buckling and bending problems due to increased weight on the bit
  • Reduce drill collar friction and torsional fatigue
  • Ensure maximum circulation by milling the fluid passageways between the stabilizer blades to neck size, which retains a safe margin of strength and excellent fluid passage—the result is superior hydraulics that pays off in maximum bit penetration rates
  • Ensure the long-term performance of your stabilizers with carbide-surfaced blades that keep the hole and drill string centered and on track. Cougar places plenty of extra carbide on the leading edge of each blade, where stabilizers typically wear the most.

Plasma Transfer Arc
Cougar consistently uses Plasma Transfer Arc (PTA) to rebuild Cougar stabilizers to the correct gauge. PTA consists of a nickel-based hardfacing powder containing tungsten carbide. This alloy is specifically designed to stand up against severe abrasion or moderate combined corrosion and abrasion. PTA is abrasion and friction resistant because of tungsten carbide particles that are evenly distributed throughout the entire matrix of the stabilizer blade. This production of tiny grains of tungsten carbide, melted by a revolutionary process, reaches a hardness of 3000-4000 on the Vickers hardness scale.

Cougar uses unique welding methods, applying tungsten carbide directly to the base metal of the stabilizer instead of laying it on the carbide.

Benefits & Features

  • Increase bonding directly to the tool’s base metal
  • Enhance strength and abrasion resistance with tungsten carbide that confers to particles, allowing the tool more running time with less wear and performance you can trust
